The easy-going one
Low, calm and surprisingly quick. A cruiser with an adventure bike’s heart.
Honda built the Rebel 1100 around the engine from its Africa Twin — a 1,084 cc parallel twin with a 270-degree crank that pulls like a big V-twin without the weight or the heat. Then they set it low and long, put the footpegs where your feet naturally fall, and gave it a seat just 700 mm from the ground.

That seat height is the whole point. Pull into a gravel lookout on a camber, stop on a hill outside a café, back it out of a motel car park at seven in the morning — both feet are flat, the weight is carried low, and nothing about the motorcycle asks anything of you. Riders who have spent a career on tall adventure bikes tell us it is the most relaxing thing they have ridden. Riders newer to big machines tell us it is the first one that never made them nervous.
Confidence at a standstill
700 mm seat, 223 kg carried low, a wide bar and a light clutch. Uneven ground, sloped forecourts and tight turns become a non-event — and that confidence carries into every corner of the day.
Torque, not revs
98 Nm at 4,750 rpm and 87 hp. Roll on in fourth and it simply goes. Three riding modes, traction control and cruise control are all standard, so long open stretches on the Canterbury Plains are a rest rather than a chore.
Set up for the road
Full LED lighting, a slim wind cowl, Quad Lock phone mount and USB power. Luggage is a large top box with either 42 or 58 litre options, with 13.6-litre tank gives a comfortable 250 km between fuel stops — about right for a coffee anyway.
An honest word
Rebel, or GS?
Most of our fleet is BMW GS, and for good reason. But not every rider wants to sit tall, and not every trip needs gravel. Here is how we would steer you.
Choose the Rebel if
- You want both feet flat on the ground, every time you stop
- You prefer a relaxed, feet-forward riding position and a low centre of gravity
- Your route is sealed — the coast roads, the Lewis, the Lindis, Central Otago — and the pace is unhurried
- You ride a cruiser at home and want the same feeling here
Choose a GS if
- Gravel is on the wish list — Glenorchy to Paradise and beyond
- You want long-travel suspension and a commanding view over the traffic
- You are covering big distances two-up with a lot of luggage
- You simply want the one everybody talks about
Prices
The Rebel 1100 sits in the same rate tier as our BMW R 1200 GS. Longer hires cost less per day.
