The new BMW R 1300 GS: Book your “next level of GS adventure” - available from the start of 2024

The new BMW R 1300 GS is a touring enduro bike that has undergone a complete redesign, resulting in a weight reduction of 12 kg compared to the previous model.

The centrepiece of the bike is the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine, which has been redesigned to be more compact than ever before thanks to a gearbox located under the engine and a new camshaft drive arrangement. From exactly 1,300 cc, it produces an output of 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm, developing a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This makes it by far the most powerful BMW boxer engine ever to be produced.

The new suspension system features a steel shell main frame that offers higher levels of stiffness than the predecessor model. The new EVO Telelever (front) & EVO Paralever (rear) offer improved suspension and provide even greater steering precision and ride stability. The heavy steel rear frame has been replaced with a die-cast aluminium construction.

If you are planning for an adventure trip in New Zealand, then the BMW R 1300 GS would be an excellent choice. The bike’s powerful engine and lightweight design make it ideal for long-distance touring on both paved and unpaved roads. The new suspension system provides greater stability and precision, making it easier to handle on rough terrain. Additionally, its compact design makes it fun to manoeuvre through New Zealand’s winding roads. Overall, the BMW R 1300 GS is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and powerful touring enduro bike for their next adventure trip with NZ Motorcycle Rentals & Tours, we have several of the R1300GS in the rental fleet from February 2024.

Review from NZBike

I used the new BMW R1300GS to guide a couple of riders from America for two days.

We had a wonderful trip visiting both Hanmer Springs, then travelling over the Southern Alps via Lewis Pass in New Zealand Stayed overnight at Maruia Springs Resort.

We had various riding conditions - four seasons over two days. Cold clear morning, hot sunny weather then in the mountains we got rain and wind and then great warm weather.

It was a great environment to really test and enjoy the R1300 GS The R1300GS will replace the R1250GS as BMW flagship adventure bike.

It’s a totally redesigned motorcycle and a huge leap forward in both technology, design and performance.

I have ridden the R1250GS a lot over the past 4 years, this was my personal motorcycle, I loved this bike and it became like an extension of my body while I was riding it. I felt very comfortable on this bike.

The BMW designers have examined every aspect of the R1250GS and just made every element lighter, more compact and better. They have created a masterpiece of design! The new R1300GS has the Wow factor as soon as you ride it, it’s a truly wonderful machine and an incredible upgrade from an already impressive R1250GS.
The R1300GS still has the unmistakable feel of the classic boxer GS models from the past, and this is a great thing with the low centre of gravity and the big motor protecting your legs and the rest of the bike in the event of a fall. It’s a great design made better with its smooth but positive gear box and very willing power delivery.

Other notable improvements are: riding modes - these really change the character of the bike from a comfortable armchair ride to a sport bike that’s so much fun on the twisty mountain passes to a bike that is very capable on dirt roads and trails.

The R1300GS has obviously been extensively improved in BMW’s wind tunnel and provides buffet free and quiet airflow to a variety of rider heights with the electronic adjustable windshield.

This theme of catering to different riders is carried through into the more compact overall design, lighter weight and impressive height adjustable suspension that lowers itself as you come to a stop.

This is truly a bike that caters for all types of riding styles and riders, it will win the hearts of many riders. I know I’m already in love.
