Geography Located in the southern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is made up of two islands approximately 1,600 kilometres (995 miles) south east of Australia. Combined with several smaller islands the total land area is about 270,534 sq. km's (104,454 sq. miles).
New Zealand's geography includes spectacular landscapes incorporating the vast mountain chain of the Southern Alps (larger than the French, Austrian and Swiss Alps combined), the volcano region of the North Island, fiords, glaciers, lakes, rainforests and extensive grassy plains.
Climate With opposite seasons to the Northern Hemisphere, January and February are our warmest months and July the coldest. Temperatures average 8øC in July and 22øC in January. Summer temperatures can however reach the low 30's.
Population With a population of 4.0 million, New Zealand is one of the world's least crowded countries. It is a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation as well as a playground for thrill seekers and adventurers.
